What it is
A kit mailed to local Citizens' Food Information Committees for the Food Fights for Freedom program of 1943, run jointly by the War Food Administration, the Office of Price Administration, the Office of Civilian Defense and the Office of War Information. Its core is the Information Program booklet. It states the problem, record harvests yet demand outrunning supply, then sets out the facts citizens need, such as 13 percent of food going to the armed forces, 10 percent to lend-lease and 75 percent to civilians, and nine citizen actions. One emblem, Uncle Sam's arm carrying a market basket, sits over four guides: Produce, Conserve, Share and Play Square. November becomes Food for Freedom Month around Thanksgiving. The rest is ready material: a home-visit folder and training guide, a food quiz, a slide-film script, radio outlines and scripts, ten discussion guides, speech notes, window-display ideas and pattern news stories.
Why read it now
Three ideas still hold. First, one emblem and a four-part action line carry every local piece, so thousands of volunteer efforts read as one campaign; Jenni Romaniuk's research on distinctive brand assets supports that kind of fixed, repeated identity. Second, the plan says outright that no rigid plan will be imposed, because local people know their town better, and then ships templates, pattern stories and scripts to adapt. That central-kit, local-execution model is how franchise and dealer marketing still runs. Third, it treats the home visit as the personal part of the campaign and trains visitors on what to say, what to leave behind and not to argue back. What has dated: the moral pressure, waste and allocation figures from 1943, and the assumption that newspapers and radio reach everyone. Its only measure is output, a thermometer of households reached, with no check on whether waste or black-market buying fell. Use: when a campaign depends on branches, distributors or ambassadors, send one kit with a fixed emblem and action line, fill-in news releases, a short script for face-to-face talks, and one outcome number to report each week.
Passages worth keeping
At the same time America's food supply represents perhaps the greatest single potential weapon of war in our fight against the Axis.
these four "guides" to action are included in this program to enable the information media to tie in a very brief action message with the basic emblem and theme
Therefore, in the knowledge that better than anyone else the people in the community itself will know what can and should be done, no rigid plan for community action will be prepared.
Home visiting is the personal part of the campaign.
Just give the facts to the editor; he will be smart enough to weigh their worth.
