Specimen Book of Type Faces and Decorative Material

A pocket specimen book from David Gildea & Co., a New York trade composition house at 11 Thames Street, two blocks from Broadway and Wall Street, that set type for advertising agencies.

What it is

A pocket specimen book from David Gildea & Co., a New York trade composition house at 11 Thames Street, two blocks from Broadway and Wall Street, that set type for advertising agencies. The front matter sells the service before any type appears: three direct telephone wires with no switchboard, the same rate day and night, a messenger sent to the buyer's desk, proofs the next day for copy sent at night, and electrotypes and mats arranged through nearby plants. A short essay argues for standard faces and for readability over fashion. The rest shows 46 faces, from Caslon No. 471, Bodoni, Kennerley and several Goudy designs to Cheltenham Bold, Franklin Gothic and Cooper Black, each in descending sizes with one repeated sentence about spacing, then numbered borders, dashes, brackets, Cooper marks and flourishes for ordering.

Why read it now

Read it as B2B marketing first. Gildea sold a commodity, hourly composition, and made it concrete: named phone lines, hours, rates, walking directions, turnaround. Those are facts a buyer can check, which is why they persuade better than a claim of quality. The book itself is the second lesson: a reference the buyer needs anyway, kept on the desk, with the supplier's number in view on every use. The type advice mostly holds. Readability as the final test, familiar faces over fashionable ones, and extra space between lines all agree with later legibility research, such as Miles Tinker's studies, which found that moderate leading helps reading. What has dated: metal type, electrotypes and mats, the claim that the principles of beauty never change, and the faces the firm admits it kept only for popular demand. Use: if your service looks like everyone else's in the Gulf market, publish the operating facts a buyer can test, such as response time, a direct line to a decision maker and one price for evening work, inside a tool the buyer will keep, like a spec sheet or a template pack.

Passages worth keeping

Three direct wires, no switchboard or operator.
Telephones, front matter

Our work has been our only advertising and our customers our only salesmen.
Foreword

The final test of fine typography is its readability. Is its general arrangement pleasing? Is it easy to read? Does it invite you to read it?
Equipment

Getting itself read is the reason for the existence of copy. The selling story is the vital thing.
Equipment

It is not so much the type face as the way the type is handled that goes to make a pleasing page. Remember that spacing is the greatest factor in the final result.
Repeated showing text, e.g. Caslon No. 471, p. 4

The scanned text has OCR errors. The passages are quoted from it, with only obvious slips fixed.
