story-lead

Define

The piece opens inside a scene. The reader is already in the situation before the offer appears.

Mechanism

Narrative attention. A specific person, place, or moment earns the right to sell. The offer arrives as the next beat, not as an interruption.

Verdict

The buyer must feel the problem before they will hear the offer.

Don't

They came for a spec, a price, or a side-by-side. A story in front of a comparison is delay.

Copy skeleton

[OPENING SCENE: who, where, the stuck moment]

[TURN: what changed / what they tried]

[BRIDGE: why this is about the reader]

[PROOF: result, artifact, or witness]

[ASK: clear next step]

Gulf note

In Gulf delivery, favor family and honor stakes over the lone-hero arc. Keep the scene concrete: a diwaniya, a Ramadan night, a first paycheck. Abstract journey language dies in the room.

Alexander Hamilton Institute 'Two Years' Trip' ad, Red Book, 1924

The headline promises a two-year trip at full pay, then the copy makes it literal: a car at the door, a train to New York, hours with bank presidents, tours of plants in Detroit and Chicago.

Bayer Aspirin tablets ad, al-Kashkul 1928

The drawing shows an empty table after a long evening, smoke still rising from the ashtray, so the reader recognises the night before the copy names it.

Belgian and International Bank in Egypt savings fund ad, Bint al-Nil 1957

Coca-Cola soft drink ad, Bint al-Nil 1951

Dr Ross pills ad, al-Kashkul 1924

Four cartoon panels tell the whole story at a glance: a man eats too much ful, suffers indigestion, is brought Dr Ross's pills, and recovers, thanking God.

Dr. Williams' Pink Pills tonic ad, The Sphinx 1919

It opens on a small scene, a traveller home from abroad asked what he thinks of our girls, and flatters British readers before it turns to pale faces, fainting and anaemia.

Fajr film ad, al-Kawakib 1954

The still drops the reader into a tense family moment: an old woman in black, an elder in a skullcap and a young woman looking away, three generations in one frame.

Fatat Paris film ad at Cinema Metro, al-Kawakib 1955

Gargoyle Mobiloil motor oil ad, The Sphinx 1923

The ad takes the reader somewhere harsher than home: in Singapore there is no repair shop on every corner, every motorist is his own mechanic, and the sun reaches 135 to 145 degrees.

Gharam al-Amira film ad at Metro cinema, al-Kawakib 1954

The black header answers where and when first: Alexandria, now at Metro, in natural colour on the panoramic screen.
