The pattern

This still is filed under Story lead.

Define

The piece opens inside a scene. The reader is already in the situation before the offer appears.

Mechanism

A specific person, place, or moment earns the right to sell. The offer arrives as the next beat, not as an interruption.

Verdict

The buyer must feel the problem before they will hear the offer

Read the pattern

Why it works

Four cartoon panels tell the whole story at a glance: a man eats too much ful, suffers indigestion, is brought Dr Ross's pills, and recovers, thanking God. Every caption ends with like this, pointing the eye back at the drawing, so the reader follows the man's face from bloated misery to relief without needing the copy. Opening on ful, the everyday Egyptian meal, makes the problem familiar at once, and the closing line invites the reader to ask the Alexandria agency for samples.

The big idea

A man who eats too much ful gets indigestion, takes Dr Ross's pills and recovers, told in four cartoon panels that each end with like this.

The offer

Dr Ross's pills; readers can ask for samples from the Dr Ross agency, P.O. Box 1358 Alexandria, for The Sydney Ross Company of New York.

Lines from the ad

كان شخص يأكل الفول كثيرا مثل هذا

There was a man who ate a lot of ful, like this

فتعافى وغدا يشكر ربه مثل هذا

So he recovered and went about thanking God, like this

تطلب عينات هذه الحبوب المفيدة من وكالة حبوب الدكتور روس

Samples of these useful pills can be requested from the Dr Ross pills agency

Steal this when

Use it when a common everyday problem can be shown as a short before-and-after sequence that the reader follows without reading copy.

The emotion

Written to Relief. It makes the Say move.

Four panels follow a man from too much ful through indigestion to recovery and thanks, each ending 'like this', and samples requested from the Alexandria agency let the reader test the relief.
