What it is
The September 1907 edition of the Inland Type Foundry's specimen book and price list, about 243 printed pages, issued from St Louis with branches in New York and Chicago. It opens with a shorter version of the Pertinent Facts essay from the 1902 book: type is cheap next to wages, type that saves 10 per cent of labour pays for itself in a year, and Standard Line (every face on a body shares one baseline) with unit-set widths saves setting time. Two sample lines show perfect lining beside the same words in ordinary type. Price tables and book faces follow, then display series such as Hearst, Winchell, Webb, New Caslon and Condensed MacFarland, each with registration numbers, font scheme and price beside the showing. The sample lines are sales lines. It also shows typewriter faces for printing facsimile letters, ornaments, secret-society cuts, brass rule and cabinets.
Why read it now
Beside the 1902 edition, this shows a sales document being edited. The attack on the Type Trust and the pages of customer letters are gone, the essay is shorter, and the price and font scheme now sit next to every showing, so choosing and ordering become one step. The core argument stays: buy type on the wages it saves, not on its price per pound. Equipment and software firms still sell to businesses on that total-cost framing. The side-by-side of a straight line and a crooked one lets the buyer see a defect he lives with daily, which beats any adjective. The product claim proved right: a shared baseline is how every modern digital font aligns. What has dated: savings figures resting on customer say-so (fully 50 per cent), and lines such as Not a single objection can be urged against this system, which invite a careful buyer to look for one. Use: for a Gulf B2B catalogue or price list, open with one page on total cost, print price and unit beside every item, and add one visual comparison of the client's current problem against the fix.
Passages worth keeping
In all offices the amount invested in type is small when compared with the yearly expenditure for wages in the composing-room.
ما تنفقه المطبعة على الحروف قليل إذا قورن بما تدفعه من أجور كل سنة، فالقرار الحقيقي يتعلق بالأجور لا بالحروف.
The printers who have adopted our system will testify that the saving in composition is large; in some cases being fully 50 per cent.
