What it is
A one-page article from a J. Walter Thompson Company staff bulletin, page 102, credited only to one who has taken many of them. It explains how the agency produced the real-person testimonial photographs for Fleischmann's Yeast for Health campaign, and it does so as a recipe. The Ingredients are a photographer willing to work 16 hours a day; one woman who inspects wardrobes, acts as chaperone, gets children's hair cut and keeps families in good humour; a trunk of two dozen hats; a trunk of summer and winter clothes and accessories; a letter from Dry Goods Economist for borrowing clothes from local department stores; ingenuity, tact, eloquence, endurance; and 5,000 testimonial letters to choose from. The Directions begin in an eastern city, with a Fleischmann car and driver, and the page stops there. Above it sits the tail of a separate piece on white space in small ads.
Why read it now
The memo records something ads hide: a real-customer testimonial is cast, dressed and lit before it runs. The subjects are real, picked from 5,000 letters, but the picture is a production with a wardrobe trunk and a chaperone. That still holds. Customer voices outperform brand claims on trust, and Nielsen's trust surveys have long ranked consumer opinions above paid ads. Modern user-generated content shoots follow the same pattern, with real buyers and a producer behind them. What has dated: the health claims Yeast for Health made would not pass today's advertising rules, and styled or paid testimonials now need disclosure in most markets. The format is the lasting lesson. A recipe turns an invisible, messy process into countable lines, each with a cost or a person, so a colleague can repeat it. Use: write your next customer-video shoot brief as Ingredients and Directions, listing the pool of real reviews you will choose from, who handles consent and styling, and what each item costs.
