Resolving the Park Folder: Project Planner (National Park Service Informational Folder Program)

A two-sided planning sheet from the Division of Publications at Harpers Ferry Center, written for park superintendents who want a new official park folder under the Service's new standardized graphics system, whose Unigrid offers ten basic formats in two series.

What it is

A two-sided planning sheet from the Division of Publications at Harpers Ferry Center, written for park superintendents who want a new official park folder under the Service's new standardized graphics system, whose Unigrid offers ten basic formats in two series. Side one covers the park's jobs: a request letter sent through the Regional Office, then three packages of base material (text, map, pictures), followed by shipment, inventory, printing regulations and cooperating associations. Side two covers the Center's five steps: design platform, thumbnail dummy, comprehensive dummy, mechanical art and approvals, then proofs and press. Blank boxes let the park log dates for each stage. The numbers are specific: more than 200 titles and over 25 million copies a year; a reprint takes three months, a minor revision five to six, a new folder at least a year.

Why read it now

Most of the process still holds. The design platform's four questions (purpose, interpretive approach, visitors' practical needs, format and arrangement) are a sound brief. The sheet names the audience's state plainly: visitors are on vacation, not in a course, so the text must please as well as inform. Its warnings match problems every agency still meets: stakeholders who want a map covering every case, client photos that are snapshots, late changes that eat the print budget. The comprehensive dummy is used as an approval tool, so everyone agrees on one full-size picture before costly final art. The standardization paid off: Unigrid, designed with Massimo Vignelli's office, has shaped park folders for decades. What has dated: mechanical art, film, federal print rules, the default "he" for designers, and year-long timelines. Use: before building a brochure or landing page for a Saudi client, ask for three packages up front (copy, map or data, pictures), name one coordinator, get sign-off on a full-size mockup, and write into the contract that proofs are for checking, not new changes.

Passages worth keeping

Most park visitors are on vacation. They are not looking for history or natural history courses.
Text Package

The park staff should not insist on a map which covers every contingency. It is all too easy for a map to become so cluttered with entries that it has little value.
Map Package

Yet most photographs submitted for park folders are not suitable for reproduction.
Picture Package

The approved comprehensive dummy then becomes the graphic designer's blueprint for the job. It should be detailed enough that another designer can complete the project.
Comprehensive Dummy

Proofs are not the stage to make additions and deletions. They are for checking purposes only.
Print Schedule
