The Printing Art Sample Book, Vol. II, No. 5 (December 1908)
The December 1908 issue of The Printing Art Sample Book, a monthly from the University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
What it is
The December 1908 issue of The Printing Art Sample Book, a monthly from the University Press in Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is a bound set of inserts, each printed on the paper it sells, with the stock's name, size and weight on the page and a list of dealers on the back. Two editorials open it. One sets Germany's four classes of paper, each with limits on rag and ash and a set use, against the single US rule of 1907 that bars ground wood pulp. The other doubts the claim of cheap paper from cornstalks, citing Joel Munsell's 1864 list of over a hundred tested fibres. About Exhibits and Exhibitors then walks through the samples: Snow White Coated Book, Danish Bond with a steel-die letterhead, Wheelwright's B-P. F. paper carrying pages from Farquhar's bulb catalogue, and Buckeye, Verde Onyx, Herculean, Rhododendron and Kenmore covers.
Why read it now
The format is the lesson. Instead of describing a paper, each mill prints on it and lets the buyer handle the result, the same logic as a free sample or a live demo. Research on touch supports it: Peck and Shu's 2009 studies found that merely touching a product raises the sense of owning it. The exhibit notes also sell in the buyer's numbers, not the mill's. Wheelwright's B-P. F. is said to bulk ten per cent better than supercalendered stock, so a mail-order house can post a thicker catalogue for the same postage. What has dated: the prices, the stocks and the dealer lists. The editorial's point about testing every shipment against a written standard still applies to any supplier, and its doubt about cornstalks proved right, since stalk paper never displaced wood pulp in the US. Use: for a Saudi B2B client with a physical product, hand prospects a sample kit with the spec and one buyer-side saving printed on each piece.
