Advertising as a Business Force: A Compilation of Experience Records

Cherington, an instructor at Harvard's Graduate School of Business Administration, compiled this 594-page textbook for the Associated Advertising Clubs of America.

What it is

Cherington, an instructor at Harvard's Graduate School of Business Administration, compiled this 594-page textbook for the Associated Advertising Clubs of America. Instead of theory, it strings together experience records quoted from Printers' Ink, Advertising and Selling and System, with light commentary and study questions after each chapter. Part I follows goods sold at retail through the distribution system: a baked-bean canner who found 80 per cent of his market unreached, R. E. Fowler's analysis charts, the conflict between manufacturers, jobbers and retailers, medium choice (Carnation Milk), the consumer, dealer help (Crisco, Victor windows), chain stores and the jobbers' private-brand war. Part II covers co-ordination with the sales force (National Cash Register, Heinz), trade-marks and goodwill, price maintenance and its court cases, who pays for advertising (a worked stove-cover-lifter example), the advertising manager and the agency. It closes with city advertising and the Printers' Ink statute against misleading ads.

Why read it now

Read it for its method: judge advertising by records of what campaigns did, and treat the product, the market and the distribution system as one plan. That holds. The bean canner's lesson, that most of his growth sat with non-users rather than rivals' customers, matches Ehrenberg-Bass evidence that brands grow mainly by adding buyers. The dealer chapters read like today's trade-marketing and retail-media problems: the retailer as a delivery point for demand the brand has already created, and the jobber's private label as a rival. The stove-cover-lifter sum, where advertising pays for itself through lower unit costs at higher volume, still explains advertising as investment to a finance team. What has dated: resale price maintenance, a whole chapter, was already losing in court (the Miles v. Park decision) and is now restricted by competition law in most markets; the jobber system has changed beyond recognition; and most evidence is the advertisers' own account of themselves. Use: before a campaign, fill in three columns, goods, market and distribution, and look for where demand will leak, as the canner did when his beans were missing from shelves.

Passages worth keeping

It is always better to know what really happened than to understand perfectly what should have happened
Printers' Ink editorial excerpt on the front leaf

He had analyzed his product, but he had not made a study of his possible market.
Chapter I, Selling Problems and the Advertiser, p. 3

The retailer's service in the case of nationally advertised goods thus becomes primarily a delivery service and not a selling service.
Chapter VI, The "Regular" Retailer, p. 119

The trade-mark, however, is only an emblem. It actually produces no business nor has it in itself any creative power.
Chapter XI, Trade-Mark Problems, p. 332, quoted from Printers' Ink

will not merely be "good business" but will be absolutely essential to any advertising appeal which can be expected to have any real effect.
Chapter XVI, Conclusion, p. 562
