The ads
"Our boys need sox" knitting poster
The Red Cross shrinks the war to one small, countable need, socks, that anyone who knits can fill at home with needles and yarn.
Red Cross poster quoting Woodrow Wilson
The President himself summons the reader into the Red Cross, so joining reads as comradeship in a national cause rather than charity work.
Red Cross war fund 'come across' poster
Anyone who cannot go overseas to fight can still come across by paying their part into the Red Cross War Fund, so the gift stands in for service.
