Iconic figure claim

An Artist's Model theatre poster, Les Maîtres de l'Affiche plate 3

commons.wikimedia.orgpublic-domain-us

The pattern

This still is filed under Iconic figure claim.

Define

A single figure, drawn, silhouetted, or posed, is the whole claim. You can read it across a street.

Mechanism

Compression into a body. The figure is not decoration. It is the sentence. Distance-legibility is the test.

Verdict

Poster scale, outdoor, packaging at a glance

Why it works

The whole design is one visual pun, and it is load-bearing: the palette is the prop of the trade named in the title, the censor's fig leaf, and the headline panel all at once, which is why the composition needs no background and no scene. Setting the title as painted lettering on a black shape, rather than as type above the figure, keeps the eye inside the illustration, so the play's name is read as part of the picture and is remembered with it. The risk is metered exactly - the figure is nude but nothing is shown, so the poster trades on suggestion without giving a licensing authority anything to act on. The pastel smears keep the background weightless, letting the single black silhouette carry all the contrast on a sheet otherwise made of pale colour.

The big idea

The painter's palette that carries the show's title is also the only thing covering the model, so the name, the trade and the tease sit in one object.

The offer

George Edwardes' Company in An Artist's Model at Daly's Theatre. No dates or prices on the sheet.

Steal this when

Use this when the product name or a core prop can physically do a second job inside the image - concealing, revealing, measuring, carrying. Build the layout on that one object, letter the name onto it, and drop the background entirely so nothing competes with the pun.

The emotion

Written to Amusement. It makes the Say move.

The palette lettered with the title is also the only thing covering the model, so the joke is the show's own name and premise, and the title arrives with the punchline.
