What it is
A four-page booklet marked Rev.1 11/2005, written by Bunting Graphics, the company chosen after a nationwide competition as the single supplier of signs bought by the National Park Service. The cover shows one signpost carrying a cluster of standard signs. Inside, a short paragraph covers each UniGuide family: park and facility identity signs, the modular Visitor Information System, wayside exhibits, road guide signs set in the NPS Roadway typeface, pathfinders, park boundary signs, NPS Arrowheads in porcelain enamel, cedar, foam or decals, MUTCD traffic signs on Type II reflective sheeting, and highway guide signs. The last page introduces the company, founded in 1980, carries a pledge from its president Jody Bunting, and sets out ordering: standard traffic and symbol signs through a web order form, and identity, visitor information and motorist signs reviewed with Harpers Ferry Center for conformance.
Why read it now
Read this as the sales piece that sits next to a standard. It shows how a supplier sells into a system it did not design: each sign family is described by the job it does for the visitor, then its materials, and the booklet ends with a personal pledge and a plain ordering path. That order, job first, specification second, how to buy last, still works for any business-to-business catalogue. The strongest line is functional: the NPS Roadway face was designed to be read quickly from a moving vehicle, and sign size follows a formula based on capital letter height. Road-sign legibility research, such as the tests behind the Clearview typeface at Pennsylvania State University, supports sizing type to reading distance and speed. What has dated: fax numbers, one staff member's email as the order inbox, and a 2005 web address. The president's pledge offers nothing to check it against. Use: if a business sells a standard range to branches or franchisees, build a four-page overview like this one, one paragraph per product family, stating the job, the materials and who approves the order.
