What the ad shows
A minimal grey-green studio print ad for Harvey Nichols shows a hand holding a puppet control bar with its strings cut and hanging loose, above a barefoot model in a plain white jumpsuit striding away from the coiled string toward a bold leopard-print and turquoise look on a mannequin. The only copy is the headline influenced by none beside the season line, Autumn Winter 2013.
INFLUENCED BY NONE
The image belongs to the brand, so we describe it here and link to where it is shown.
Harvey Nichols: cut puppet strings sell a fashion-forward woman
Harvey Nichols. Agency: FP7. The ad itself is shown at adsoftheworld.com.
The pattern
This still is filed under Image carries the claim.
Define
One image does the entire argument. Copy, if any, is a caption, not a second ad.
Mechanism
Pictorial claim. The picture is readable as a sentence. If we need a paragraph, we picked the wrong picture.
Verdict
The idea is visual and the surface is a poster, a feed, or a silent frame.
Why it works
Making the puppet control literal, and showing its strings already slack, lets the ad celebrate independence instead of preaching it, since the metaphor has already resolved by the time the reader sees it. Dressing the model plainly while the bold look waits on the mannequin stages the choice she is about to make, and the vast negative space with tiny type signals luxury restraint.
The big idea
A woman who has slipped her puppet strings walks toward the outfit she chose herself, so the Harvey Nichols shopper dresses by her own taste, influenced by none.
The offer
Harvey Nichols Autumn Winter 2013 collection; no price or terms given.
Steal this when
Use when a premium brand wants to flatter its customer as independent and discerning: literalise the thing they are free of, strings, a crowd, a rulebook, and show them walking away from it toward the product.
The emotion
Written to Comparison. It makes the Say move.
Slack puppet strings and the line INFLUENCED BY NONE move the choice away from matching what others dictate and onto the woman's own taste, as she walks toward the look she picked.
