What the ad shows
Three print ads arrange black seat belt webbing into interlocking Arabic geometric patterns, a lattice, a radiating rosette, a dense star tessellation, across an all white page. In each one a single tongue and buckle sit apart, unfastened, carrying the QIB logo and the line seat belts save lives, let's make them part of our culture.
SEAT BELTS SAVE LIVES
LET'S MAKE THEM PART OF OUR CULTURE
The image belongs to the brand, so we describe it here and link to where it is shown.
Qatar Islamic Bank: seat belts woven into Islamic geometry
Qatar Islamic Bank. Agency: Ogilvy. The ad itself is shown at adsoftheworld.com.
The pattern
This still is filed under Tribal heritage appeal.
Define
The offer is tied to lineage, craft, place, or a named heritage the buyer already honors.
Mechanism
Inherited meaning. The product borrows dignity from a story older than the brand. It must be true enough to say in the room.
Verdict
The heritage is real and the buyer's identity is part of the purchase: food, dress, hospitality, land.
Why it works
Building a heritage ornament, a lattice, a rosette, a star tessellation, out of the safety object itself makes buckling up feel native rather than an imported rule, since the pattern reads instantly as ours before any word is understood. The one unfastened buckle is the only break in an otherwise perfect pattern, so the eye lands exactly on the missing click, and the bank's logo on that buckle casts it as the piece that completes the pattern.
The big idea
Seat belts are woven into traditional Islamic geometric patterns, a lattice, a rosette, a star tessellation, with one unfastened buckle carrying the QIB logo as the missing piece.
Steal this when
For a public safety or behaviour change message aimed at an audience that sees the rule as foreign, build a heritage motif out of the safety object and leave one piece visibly undone.
The emotion
Written to Belonging. It makes the Say move.
Seat belts form the lattice, rosette and star patterns readers know as their own, and the one open buckle is the act left to do, so buckling up completes a familiar design.
