Direct Advertising, Vol. V (with Sample Book of Mill-Brand Papers)
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The medium is the sample - the product performs in front of the buyer instead of being described to him, which is why the page foot always identifies the stock by name and weight. Strathmore states the mechanism outright: an atmosphere absorbed through the senses is "more convincing than formal argument," so the ad's job is to be touched rather than read. Crocker-McElwain converts a dull technical fact (both sides of the sheet print) into a puzzle with a prize, which buys attention, forces the reader to handle the paper to answer, and produces a name and address as the by-product. The perforated reply cards then turn the aesthetic admiration the volume has just created into a list entry, at the exact moment of highest interest.
Steal this when
Steal this when the thing you sell can only be judged by being experienced - materials, finishes, food, software feel, production quality - and description alone always undersells it. Also steal the puzzle-plus-prize device when a genuine product advantage is real but too technical to carry a headline on its own.
