Beecham's Pills advertisement, 1891
The pattern
This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.
Define
A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.
Mechanism
People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.
Verdict
We have a credible reference the buyer will accept
Why it works
The headline puts a value in quotation marks at the top, "Worth a guinea a box", a gold-coin sum, and the foot of the same ad says the box costs 25 cents, so the reader meets the high valuation first and the real price lands as relief. The long italic list of complaints, from sick headache to disturbed sleep, is what justifies the valuation: one box is presented as a family medicine chest, not a single remedy. The laughing friar holding up a pill gives the claim a cheerful face instead of a doctor's authority.
The big idea
One 25-cent box is framed as a whole family medicine chest "worth a guinea", and the long list of ailments is there to back the valuation.
The offer
A box of Beecham's Pills, sold by all druggists at 25 cents a box, with a New York depot at 365 Canal St.
The proof
Only the quoted valuation "Worth a guinea a box" and a long list of complaints said to be relieved. No testimonials, figures or named doctors.
Lines from the ad
"WORTH A GUINEA A BOX."A box of BEECHAM'S PILLS constitutes a family medicine chest.Of all druggists. Price 25 cents a box.Steal this when
Use this when one cheap product replaces several purchases: state a high quoted value up top, list everything it covers, and let the small real price close the page.
The emotion
Written to Relief. It makes the Avoid mistake.
A long italic list of complaints, from sick headache to disturbed sleep, is promised relief by one 25-cent box, with no testimonial, figure or named doctor behind the claim.
