Very personally yours" Kotex ad, Life 1950, art by Coby Whitmore
The pattern
This still is filed under Reason-why.
Define
A specific reason the offer is priced, timed, or structured this way. Not a mood. A reason.
Mechanism
Justification. A concrete cause makes a claim feel earned. Because we overbought. Because the season ends Sunday.
Verdict
The price or the ask looks irregular
Why it works
The category was unmentionable in 1950, so the ad refuses to depict or discuss it and instead depicts the reward - being seen, being laughed with, holding composure. The mask being lifted does the work of the euphemism: what is hidden and what is revealed is the whole subject, handled as party imagery rather than as anatomy. Product proof arrives only as tiny concrete phrases, flat pressed ends and safety center, which are specific enough to be believed and abstract enough to be read on a crowded train. The repeated phrase very personally yours, opening and closing, turns a mass-market commodity into something private and owned.
Steal this when
Copy this when the category is embarrassing, medical or socially awkward and naming the problem plainly would make the reader look away. Show the life the product makes possible, keep the mechanism to two or three quiet technical phrases, and let one repeated line carry the promise.
