Trade card, Alex M. Hays & Co., 31 Union Square - Novelties for the Holidays 02
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The picture withholds its punchline from one character and gives it to the reader, so the buyer completes the joke themselves and owns it. Running a second card off the identical grid, same green, same lettering, same Pierrot cast, turns a single handout into a set worth collecting, which multiplies exposures per customer at no extra design cost. Reversing the type block to the opposite corner is the only variable changed, which is what lets the two read as a series rather than a reprint.
Steal this when
Steal this when you want repeat exposure from a cheap giveaway: hold the layout, palette and cast fixed and change only the scene, so each new drop is recognisable as yours and collectable as a set. It also works whenever the reader spotting something a character cannot see is a better hook than any claim you could write.
