7-Up "You like it, it likes you" ad, Ladies' Home Journal, 1948
The pattern
This still is filed under Campaign line as series.
Define
One line that can be replayed across executions so the campaign is a family, not a one-off.
Mechanism
Repeatable frame. Each ad is a verse. The line is the chorus. Recognition compounds because the structure is stable.
Verdict
We will run more than one execution and need them to add up in memory.
Why it works
The ad solves a category problem with one image: a soft drink is usually filed as a children's purchase, so the family is literally stacked on the bottle to widen the buyer's idea of who it is for. Scale distortion does the work that a claim would otherwise have to do, because a bottle the size of a hillside reads as abundance and as a ride, which attaches the product to play without a word of argument. The cut-out photographic figures against painted sky create a poster-flat surface that keeps the label at the optical centre of the page. The slogan's reciprocal construction, you like it and it likes you, quietly answers the digestion worry mothers had about carbonated drinks without ever stating the objection.
The big idea
7-Up is the "fresh up" drink for the whole family, shown as mother, father, son and daughter riding one giant bottle through the sky.
Lines from the ad
The "fresh up" family drink! You like it... it likes you.Steal this when
Use this when your product is filed in the buyer's head as being for one narrow user and the growth is in widening the occasion, so you show every member of the household using it at once. The giant-product-as-vehicle device is right whenever you need scale and delight from a single flat image.
The emotion
Written to Joy. It does neither clearly.
Mother, father, son and daughter ride one giant 7-Up bottle through the sky: the delight is a fantasy built on the bottle, not a real family moment with the drink in its place.
