Philco electric ice cream maker ad, Bint al-Nil 1955
American University in Cairo, Rare Books and Special Collections Library. Bint al-Nil. RBSCL believes this item is in the public domain.
The pattern
This still is filed under Step-by-step playbook.
Define
A numbered path through a process that used to feel like a fog.
Mechanism
Sequence as comfort. Numbering implies completeness and lowers the cost of starting. The last step is usually the offer.
Verdict
The buyer is blocked by complexity, not by desire.
Why it works
An unfamiliar gadget is made easy by four small drawings that walk through the whole job: prepare the mix, put the bowl in the fridge, plug in the cable, serve the ice cream. The copy adds a concrete time, about 30 minutes, and contrasts it with the old hand-cranked machines, so the reader sees both the effort saved and the result. It also speaks to the woman who already owns an electric fridge and gives her a new use for it.
The big idea
The electric fridge the reader already owns can now make ice cream by itself: mix, place, plug in, and in about 30 minutes it is ready.
The offer
The electric ice cream maker that runs inside an electric fridge, about 2 litres, AC current only, sold at Philco, 15 Alfi Bey Street, Cairo.
The proof
Four small drawings demonstrate each step, and the copy says the machine churns and freezes the mix into rich ice cream in about 30 minutes, more easily and quietly than older machines.

Steal this when
Use it when a new device looks complicated and a few numbered pictures can show that anyone can finish the job at home.
The emotion
Written to Desire. It makes the Say move.
Four drawings show ice cream made inside the reader's own electric fridge in about 30 minutes, and the terms sit beside the want: about 2 litres, AC current only, sold at Philco in Cairo.
