al-Hilal magazine teaser ad, al-Kawakib 1961
American University in Cairo, Rare Books and Special Collections Library. al-Kawakib. RBSCL believes this item is in the public domain.
The pattern
This still is filed under Curiosity gap.
Define
A missing piece is named but not filled, so the reader has to continue to close the loop.
Mechanism
Incomplete pattern. Attention is the itch. The next line is the scratch. The gap is a debt we must pay.
Verdict
The following sentence can pay off the gap with a fact, a name, or a mechanism
Why it works
A cartoon policeman swinging handcuffs and the question أين حسن؟ make the reader stop and wonder who is missing and why. The answer comes one line later: he went looking for al-Hilal magazine. The small print then delivers the real news, that Ali Amin will edit al-Hilal from the start of January, so the joke carries an announcement readers might otherwise skip.
The big idea
A policeman holding empty handcuffs asks where Hassan went, and the answer, he went looking for al-Hilal, carries the news of the magazine's new editor.
The offer
al-Hilal magazine under its new editor, Ali Amin, from the start of January.
The proof
A known name: the journalist Ali Amin takes over as editor.
Lines from the ad
أين حسن ؟Where is Hassan?
ذهب يبحث عن مجلة الهلالHe went looking for al-Hilal magazine
يرأس على أمين تحرير مجلة الهلال ابتداء من أول ينايرAli Amin edits al-Hilal starting from the first of January
Steal this when
Use it when you have a dry piece of news, like a new editor or a relaunch date, and need a small puzzle to get it read.
The emotion
Written to Amusement. It makes the Say move.
The joke lands on the magazine itself: a policeman with empty handcuffs asks where Hassan is, the punchline says he went looking for al-Hilal, and the news of Ali Amin as editor follows.
