Allenburys glycerine and blackcurrant pastilles ad, al-Kawakib 1955
American University in Cairo, Rare Books and Special Collections Library. al-Kawakib. RBSCL believes this item is in the public domain.
The pattern
This still is filed under Pack as storefront.
Define
The pack is the store. On a shelf or a thumbnail, it must stop, name, and close without a clerk.
Mechanism
Shelf rhetoric. Hierarchy, claim, and proof live on the face. The first five centimeters do the campaign's job.
Verdict
The buy happens in a glance among competitors: grocery, pharmacy, app store icon.
Why it works
In a narrow column the ad does two things: the Arabic copy names every winter illness the reader fears, cold, flu, catarrh, and says the pastille stops the germs that come in through the mouth. Then the tin itself is shown, with its English label and London maker, so the reader knows exactly what to ask for at the pharmacy. A cheap sweet is sold as protection.
The big idea
A blackcurrant pastille sold as a guard at the mouth: it stops the germs of colds, catarrh and flu, and the tin shows what to ask for.
The offer
Allenburys glycerine and blackcurrant pastilles in their tin, made by Allen & Hanburys Ltd of London.
The proof
The tin names the London maker, Allen & Hanburys Ltd, and says the pastilles are made from the fresh ripe fruit.

MADE FROM THE FRESH RIPE FRUITSteal this when
Use it when a small everyday product needs to be bought as prevention, and the pack must be recognised on the counter.
The emotion
Written to Anxiety. It does neither clearly.
It names every winter illness, colds, catarrh, flu, and says the pastille stops their germs at the mouth, then shows the tin to ask for, but gives no detail on how well it protects.
