Price-anchoring offer

What the ad shows

A 40-page bilingual flyer runs under the red and green Othaim masthead: the cover carries a dark green festival band with the chalkboard-style lockup 'سُفْرَةٌ بِجَمِيعِ النَّكَهَاتِ / Cooking Festival', foil balloons reading 5, 10 and 20, a plate of kabsa, and a 3 by 4 grid of staples with huge red prices over small struck-through old ones. Inner pages change tint by category, pale green for produce, icy blue for frozen, pink for beauty, and the back cover closes with QR codes for a survey, WhatsApp offers and the Iktissab app.

Othaim Markets: Cooking Festival week with staples at round prices

The pattern

This still is filed under Price-anchoring offer.

Define

A higher reference number is shown first so the real price reads as a concession, not as a starting bid.

Mechanism

People judge a price against the first number they see. The anchor must be a real comparison or it collapses.

Verdict

We have a credible reference the buyer will accept

Read the pattern

Why it works

The 5, 10 and 20 balloons turn the week into a price game, and the giant red whole numbers make each tile readable at a glance while the small struck-through price supplies the anchor. Round prices are kept for the hero staples while produce and beauty keep x.99 prices, so the round number itself signals the real deal. The Iktissab ribbons and per-customer caps turn the deepest cuts into loyalty sign-ups and stop bulk buying.

The big idea

A weekly flyer becomes a Cooking Festival where hero staples drop to round prices, 5, 10, 20 and up, so shoppers remember a few numbers instead of decimals.

The offer

7 to 13 October 2026: apples 1.5 kg for SAR 10, basmati 5 kg for SAR 35, Tide 6 kg for SAR 55; several deals for Iktissab members only, capped per customer.

The proof

A struck-through previous price beside most offer prices, such as basmati 47.99 down to 35 and Tide 75.50 down to 55; pack weights in badges; prices stated as VAT-inclusive.

Steal this when

When a multi-category retailer runs a weekly promotion and wants shoppers to carry away a handful of price points, not a catalogue.
