The Business of Advertising

The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Calkins splits advertising into two unlike abilities, the statistical bookkeeping mind and the creative one, and then argues that the second cannot start until the first has finished, which is the plan-before-copy sequence the modern agency still sells. The plates do work the prose cannot: reproducing real advertisements as mounted exhibits lets the reader judge execution against principle on the same page turn. The twelve-step numbered outline converts a craft into a purchasable procedure, which is exactly what makes a manufacturer believe professional help is necessary. His test of copy is readability rather than literary quality, which keeps the whole book pointed at the reader's attention instead of the writer's taste.

Steal this when

Steal this structure when you are selling a service whose value is invisible, and you need the buyer to see the process as a sequence of named, ordered steps rather than as talent. The exhibit plates are worth copying whenever a principle only becomes convincing once the reader sees the finished work beside it.
