Principles of Advertising: A Systematic Syllabus

The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Why it works

The outline form is the content. By forcing every claim to sit at a numbered level under a parent claim, Starch exposes which propositions about advertising are actually subordinate to which, and the exercise reveals how little of the field rested on evidence in 1910. Placing the source and page under each point makes the syllabus falsifiable, which is what separates it from the opinion-driven trade writing of the period and is the seed of the recognition scores he later built a firm on. The two-part split, attention first and then persuasion and action, imports the psychology of the day directly into the structure rather than decorating the argument with it.

Steal this when

You are building the first teaching artefact in a field with no agreed curriculum: outline it to four levels, attach a source to every claim, and let the empty branches show you where the research has to go. Also the right structure when you want a client to see that a familiar practice has no evidence under it.
