Making Advertisements and Making Them Pay
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
The book opens on a dialogue between Brown the pickle manufacturer and his doubting partner, which dramatises the thesis about word of mouth before any claim is asserted, and gives the reader a scene to carry instead of a definition. Chapter titles are single abstract nouns, Atmosphere, Sincerity, Common Sense, so the argument is about temperament rather than steps, and nothing can be lifted as a checklist. Every chapter is anchored by a reproduced advertisement inside a black box with one italic line of comment underneath, which keeps the criticism attached to evidence and turns the book into an annotated swipe file. Durstine also lets the exhibits argue against advertising's own vanity, reprinting Butterick's lampoon of data-worship rather than writing the attack himself.
Steal this when
You need to teach taste and judgment rather than a process, in a field where readers want a formula you do not believe in. Pair short essays named for one quality each with a facing real-world exhibit and a single line of commentary, so the example carries the argument.
