Influencing Men in Business: The Psychology of Argument and Suggestion

The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Why it works

Scott splits persuasion into two named mechanisms and then supplies a decision rule for choosing between them, which converts a vague craft into a routing question with an answer. The numbered outline printed at the head of every chapter is a structural promise: it lets a busy reader scan the argument, drop into the part he needs, and trust that the chapter is going somewhere. Proof is introspective rather than cited: he walks the reader through his own hesitation in front of an advertisement, so the reader supplies the evidence himself and cannot argue with it. The central asymmetry he builds the book on, that deliberation invites comparison and delay while suggestion produces immediate action, is the ancestor of every later case for reducing friction and closing with an assumptive question.

Steal this when

Use this frame when a piece is underperforming and you cannot tell whether the fix is more reasons or fewer decisions: it gives you criteria for choosing instead of instinct. The outline-before-chapter structure is the right one to copy for any teaching document that must hand practitioners a rule rather than a menu.
