The pattern

This still is filed under Craft-argument book.

Define

A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.

Mechanism

Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.

Verdict

We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.

Why it works

French narrows the whole book to one measurable variable he calls attention value, then refuses to discuss campaign, product or copy at all - the self-imposed scope is what makes an abstract subject teachable. The core method is paired specimens: he prints the ad as it ran and the ad rearranged, side by side, so the reader sees the improvement instead of being told about it, and the italic caption under each is a verdict of one sentence rather than an essay. He converts taste into a checkable list - harmony, proportion, balance, symmetry, tone, perspective, colour - which turns a designer's judgement into something an account man can argue with. And by ending on optical sequence, the demand that display lines carry the eye unbroken from catch line to signature, he gives the layout a single pass-fail test any page can be held against.

Steal this when

Steal this when you are teaching a craft judgement that people think is innate taste: print the bad version and the fixed version at full size, caption each with one sentence of verdict, and give the reader a short named list of principles so the fix is arguable rather than felt. The typescript-to-finished-plate walkthrough is the structure to copy for any process document where the handoff between two roles is where the quality gets lost.
