War-bond ask

The pattern

This still is filed under War-bond ask.

Define

Money is requested as duty. The instrument is financial. The motive is belonging to the effort.

Mechanism

Civic purchase. The buyer is not shopping. They are enlisting with a wallet. Price is framed as participation.

Verdict

A public or communal instrument needs wide subscription and the stake is genuinely shared.

Why it works

The top half reads as a film announcement, so the poster is looked at like entertainment before the bond ask arrives at the bottom. Gable is not endorsing from a studio: the goggles, the flying helmet and 'MAJOR CLARK GABLE FOR THE U. S. ARMY AIR FORCES' show a star who enlisted, which makes 'BUY EXTRA WAR BONDS' feel like a small matching act from the viewer.

The big idea

A Technicolor war film made by Major Clark Gable, shown in flying gear, lends its star pull and his service to an ask for extra bonds.

The offer

Buy extra War Bonds. The poster also announces the Technicolor film “Combat America.”

The proof

Clark Gable's name with his rank, Major, and 'for the U. S. Army Air Forces'; the photo of him in flight helmet and goggles; the 'Official U.S. Treasury Poster' tag.

Lines from the ad

A MOVIE IN TECHNICOLOR “COMBAT AMERICA”

PRODUCED AND NARRATED BY MAJOR CLARK GABLE FOR THE U. S. ARMY AIR FORCES

BUY EXTRA WAR BONDS

Steal this when

When a well-known figure has personally taken on the same cost you are asking the audience to share, and you have a piece of their work to promote alongside the ask.

The emotion

Written to Admiration. It makes the Say move.

Shows what the star actually did: Major Clark Gable in flying helmet and goggles, making a film for the Army Air Forces, so the extra bond reads as matching his act.
