Us-versus-them positioning

"America's answer: production" poster

commons.wikimedia.orgpublic-domain-us

The pattern

This still is filed under Us-versus-them positioning.

Define

The buyer is invited into a side. The product is what we use. The named other is what we refuse.

Mechanism

Identity contrast. Choosing the offer is choosing a group. The out-group does as much work as the claim.

Verdict

The category is crowded

Read the pattern

Why it works

The wrench is not just held, it is working: its jaw closes around the O of PRODUCTION, which is drawn as a nut being tightened, so the word itself becomes the job. A gloved fist in heavy black enters from the edge on a steep diagonal, and 'America's answer' runs along the sleeve, which reads as a reply to an attack without naming the attacker. With three words and one gesture the poster turns every shift on the factory floor into the nation's response.

The big idea

The nation's reply to war is a worker's fist on a wrench, tightening the O of PRODUCTION as if the word were a bolt.

Lines from the ad

America's answer!
PRODUCTION

Steal this when

When you need a whole workforce to see its routine task as the answer to a threat, and one tool and one word can carry the idea.

The emotion

Written to Duty. It does neither clearly.

A gloved fist tightens the O of PRODUCTION under America's answer, making each shift the nation's reply, but it names no single act, target or date beyond production itself.
