Mail-order catalog

Larkin Company Trade Catalog, 'This Handsome Coat, Yours Without Cost' (cover)

The pattern

This still is filed under Mail-order catalog.

Define

A catalog that is the store: browse, choose, order, without a clerk and often without a website.

Mechanism

Assortment as argument. Density, numbering, and an order path do the closing. The book is the funnel.

Verdict

We have a range, remote buyers, and a way to take the order on the same object.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Red ink is spent only on the three things that must be read - the free promise, the mechanism and the signature - which is colour used as hierarchy rather than decoration. The offer is split so Without Cost lands before the $10 condition, and the condition is then phrased as a purchase of goods the household already buys, so it reads as redirected spending rather than new spending. Calling the coat just one of the 1700 valuable Premiums turns a single-item circular into an argument for the whole catalogue and the plan behind it. The dry specification paragraph supplies the weight, cloth and trim detail that stops a free coat being read as a cheap one.

Steal this when

Use this when one flagship premium has to sell an entire programme: dramatise the single item, then immediately widen it to the catalogue so the reader joins the plan rather than claiming one gift. The red-for-three-elements discipline is worth copying on any two-colour piece.
