Bartlett's blacking, bluing and stove polish 'Afghan warriors' trade card
The pattern
This still is filed under Keepable trade card.
Define
A small card people keep (pretty, useful, or collectible) that carries the brand after the encounter.
Mechanism
Retention object. The gift is the media. Recall is paid for by usefulness or delight, not by repetition.
Verdict
We can put a physical or digital keepable in someone's pocket and they will not throw it away.
Why it works
The picture is the payment - the card is worth keeping on its own, and the only advertising is the name sitting where the artwork is empty, so copy never fights image. The type stack is a strict hierarchy: firm, then cities, then the three product lines, which lets one card carry a whole catalogue without a single sales sentence. Naming and numbering the image as Afghan Warriors. turns it into a set item, and the wish to complete a set is what buys repeat exposure. The subject is topical exotica for the period, which is why a polish maker can borrow it without any connection to the product.
Steal this when
You sell an unexciting, low-consideration household product and need distribution and recall rather than argument - give people something they want to keep, and let the brand ride in the empty corner of it.
