The Boston Sunday herald, every lady will read, fashion supplement, March 24 (1895) - poster
The pattern
This still is filed under Issue-as-product mood sell.
Define
The issue is sold as a feeling: a face, a color field, a stance. Not as a table of contents.
Mechanism
Mood as SKU. The reader buys the atmosphere and trusts the articles will match. Zoning and figure do the listing's job.
Verdict
We publish a periodical or drop and the buyer chooses identity before they choose an article.
Why it works
Turning the figure away from the viewer converts the woman into a garment: with no face to read, the only subject left is the hat, the hair and the lace, which is precisely what a fashion supplement sells. The two flanking text blocks fill the dead space beside the neck, so the promise and the date are read inside the illustration rather than after it. Splitting the masthead across the top and bottom of the sheet lets the name bracket the image and survive being pasted beside other bills, and letting HERALD bleed off both edges makes the poster look bigger than its paper.
Steal this when
Use when a recurring product needs urgency for one dated edition: name the date and the section, not the publication's virtues. The back-turned figure is the move whenever the clothes, the object or the result matters more than the person.
