Issue-as-product mood sell

Harper's April '98 (1898) - poster

The pattern

This still is filed under Issue-as-product mood sell.

Define

The issue is sold as a feeling: a face, a color field, a stance. Not as a table of contents.

Mechanism

Mood as SKU. The reader buys the atmosphere and trusts the articles will match. Zoning and figure do the listing's job.

Verdict

We publish a periodical or drop and the buyer chooses identity before they choose an article.

Why it works

Penfield drops the date into the sky, the one part of the picture doing no work, so the type costs him nothing in image space and still reads first. The ploughman behind the golfer is the joke that earns the second look: two men working the same field in April, one for a living and one for sport, which gives a poster with no product in it a reason to be studied. Scale does all the depth work, a giant foreground figure against thumbnail background figures, so the sheet stays flat enough to print cheaply and still reads as a landscape. Repeating the orange of the jacket in the knee band and the plough handles keeps a five-ink sheet feeling deliberate.

Steal this when

Your product is tied to a season and the audience is defined by a pastime. Put one oversized figure doing the pastime in the foreground, wit in the background, and the date where the picture is empty.
