Why it works
Figure and lettering are the same cream ink on the same red ground, so the type belongs to the picture instead of sitting on it; the arcing title also curves around the silhouette rather than clearing a box for itself. Detail is spent only where character lives - face, hair bow, collar, the pinched skirt - and everything else is left as a shape, which is what makes it carry at distance.
