Exhibit in the column

Izvestiia ASNOVA no. 1 - cover

The pattern

This still is filed under Exhibit in the column.

Define

An image is dropped into the column of type so the reader meets picture and argument in one scan.

Mechanism

In-flow exhibit. The figure is not a separate see fig. 2. It starts the paragraph. Eye and mind start together.

Verdict

Long copy must show as well as tell: a product cutaway, a before/after, a map in the story.

Read the pattern

Why it works

The four manifesto lines run on a typographic pun: the final С of СССР is set as one huge bold letter that also starts the next word, so each claim grows physically out of the state's initials. You cannot separate the sentence from the source. The masthead does the same trick across alphabets, superimposing Cyrillic and Latin so a single mark serves a domestic and a foreign reader without translation. The right-hand pair of questions, who does ASNOVA work for and who works with ASNOVA, converts a manifesto into a qualification filter: the reader is handed a list and asked to find himself in it. Rules and bars carry the whole thing, so a page with no illustration budget still reads as engineered rather than set.

Steal this when

You need a single sheet that announces a new organisation and recruits at the same time, with no photography budget and no product to show. Also the model to copy when a headline word and the copy beneath it should be locked together rather than merely stacked.
