The Thompson Blue Book On Advertising (1906) (34 page images)
The pattern
This still is filed under Craft-argument book.
Define
A book or manual that sells a method by arguing it. Chapters as proof, not as decoration around a product.
Mechanism
Authority by treatise. The reader who accepts the argument has already accepted the seller as teacher.
Verdict
We can teach a craft in public and the teaching is the funnel.
Why it works
This is the agency making itself the publisher of its own category's reference book, so that the act of planning a campaign puts the seller's name in the buyer's hands before any pitch happens. The cover spends its entire budget on craft, which is the argument: a firm that produces this is a firm whose production you can trust with your own. The owl and lamp mark is carried over unchanged from the trade ads, so book and advertising compound into one recognisable identity instead of two. Calling it a Blue Book borrows an existing genre name that already means authoritative directory, so the category is understood before the book is opened.
Steal this when
Use this when you want authority in a category you also sell into and a straight pitch would be discounted. Publish the reference the buyer already needs, put your existing trademark on it, and let the production quality carry the competence claim.
