Mechanism
Moral equate. The small act inherits the gravity of the large one. The ask is ordinary. The meaning is not.

Why it works
It takes an inherently unglamorous commodity (lumber for crates) and makes it heroic by showing it being used on the front lines under fire. The colloquial headline 'Get a load of this...' adds a tough, working-class tone.
