al-Muwasat race lottery ticket ad, al-Musawwar 1936
American University in Cairo, Rare Books and Special Collections Library. al-Musawwar. RBSCL believes this item is in the public domain.
The pattern
This still is filed under Reason-why.
Define
A specific reason the offer is priced, timed, or structured this way. Not a mood. A reason.
Mechanism
Justification. A concrete cause makes a claim feel earned. Because we overbought. Because the season ends Sunday.
Verdict
The price or the ask looks irregular
Why it works
The dream line sits over a jockey on a galloping horse and a spill of coins from money bags, so the reader sees the win before he reads the terms. The copy then argues like a salesman, not a charity: same government oversight as the big world sweepstakes, but a smaller pool so each ticket has better odds, a 20 piaster price and an instant receipt. A boxed timetable gives the last day to buy and the draw date, so delay has a visible cost.
The big idea
The Muwasat race lottery gives the same deal as any world sweepstake, but its smaller circle of buyers means each ticket has a much better chance of winning.
The offer
Tickets at 20 piastres, or a book of 6 for 100 piastres, for the race on 22 August 1936 at the Alexandria Racing Club. Last day to buy Thursday 20 August, draw Friday 21 August.
The proof
Under the same government oversight as world race sweepstakes, with prizes paid at the same share of ticket sales, and a receipt handed over at once at Society offices and post offices.
Lines from the ad
ربما تحققت أحلامك الجميلة!Your beautiful dreams may come true
الربح وفير والحظ كثير فى سباق المواساةThe winnings are plenty and the luck is high in the Muwasat race
أطرق أبواب الربح كلما وجدت اليها سبيلاKnock on the doors of profit whenever you find a way to them
Steal this when
Use it when you are the smaller local option in a category known for big foreign names, and being smaller is itself the advantage.
The emotion
Written to Hope. It makes the Avoid mistake.
'Your beautiful dreams may come true' over spilling money bags sells the best case, and 'the luck is high' claims better odds without giving any figure for the chance of winning.
