The pattern

This still is filed under Curiosity gap.

Define

A missing piece is named but not filled, so the reader has to continue to close the loop.

Mechanism

Incomplete pattern. Attention is the itch. The next line is the scratch. The gap is a debt we must pay.

Verdict

The following sentence can pay off the gap with a fact, a name, or a mechanism

Why it works

An orange mushroom cloud and a frightened question about atomic fallout open a worry the reader cannot close alone. The ad names a famous scientist who answers it, but only inside the coming issue, so the purchase is the answer. A list of lighter headlines below, from life on Mars to a Hollywood star, widens the pull, and the orange bar ends on the date and the price.

The big idea

The fear of atomic fallout is posed as a question, and Dr. Schweitzer's answer is placed only inside al-Hilal's September issue.

The offer

al-Hilal for 1 September 1957, 5 piasters: Dr. Schweitzer on atomic fallout, plus Mars, Joan Crawford, Mahmoud Taymour on Arabic fiction, and hypnosis against divorce.

The proof

Named authorities: the scientist Dr. Schweitzer, with Zaki Tulaymat, Abbas Hafiz and Mahmoud Taymour among the writers, beside a photo of an atomic cloud.

Lines from the ad

الرماد الذرى يصيب العالم بكوارث؟!

Will atomic fallout strike the world with disasters?

على سطح المريخ أقزام وعمالقة يعيشون على الحب!

On the surface of Mars, dwarfs and giants live on love

مكافحة الطلاق بالتنويم المغناطيسى؟!

Fighting divorce with hypnosis?

Steal this when

When you sell content, open with the reader's biggest current fear as a question and make the next issue the only place the answer lives.

The emotion

Written to Anxiety. It does neither clearly.

It opens the fallout worry with a question over an orange atomic cloud and names Dr. Schweitzer as the answer, but gives no part of that answer, so the unknown stays hidden behind 5 piasters.

Fear with no step to take
