Egyptian General Cinema Organisation weekly cinema programme ad, al-Kawakib 1970
American University in Cairo, Rare Books and Special Collections Library. al-Kawakib. RBSCL believes this item is in the public domain.
The pattern
This still is filed under Typographic cover frame.
Define
A stable type frame (masthead, rules, folio) that stays put so the image inside can change every issue.
Mechanism
Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
Rank is built into the layout: Ramses, Opera, Diana and Miami each get a box with the film title in bold and the stars underneath, like Ahmed Mazhar and Zizi al-Badrawi for Love and the Price. Ten more halls follow as one-line rows, so the eye takes in the big releases first and reads the rest as a menu, under the same illustrated header that tops the column every week.
The big idea
The state cinema body turns its week into a ranked guide: four headline films boxed with their stars, then every other hall on a single line.
The offer
This week's films in Cairo: The Professionals at Ramses, Love in Rome at Opera, Love and the Price at Diana, Thieves on a Date at Miami, and ten more cinemas.
The proof
Star names under the headline films, such as Ahmed Mazhar and Zizi al-Badrawi, and Kamal al-Shennawi and Nahed Sherif.

When one owner runs many venues or listings and needs a weekly guide that puts the headline items above the rest.
