Cairo Film Distribution Company cinema programme ad, al-Kawakib 1969
American University in Cairo, Rare Books and Special Collections Library. al-Kawakib. RBSCL believes this item is in the public domain.
The pattern
This still is filed under Typographic cover frame.
Define
A stable type frame (masthead, rules, folio) that stays put so the image inside can change every issue.
Mechanism
Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
The column works as a timetable the reader actually needs: each cinema name sits in a black tab with its current film beside it, split by Cairo and Alexandria, so a moviegoer finds tonight's choice in one scan. The cartoon of a man pointing at the list and the line about the best evenings of the week turn a schedule into an invitation, and the distributor signs the bottom as the source of all of it.
The big idea
The distributor turns its release list into the reader's plan for the week: every cinema in Cairo and Alexandria beside the film it is showing, found at a glance.
The offer
This week's films at named cinemas in Cairo, such as Miami, Diana and Opera, and in Alexandria, from the Cairo Film Distribution Company.

Steal this when
When a company with many outlets or titles can own a weekly slot by publishing the guide people check before going out.
