al-Musawwar magazine ad, al-Kawakib 1964
American University in Cairo, Rare Books and Special Collections Library. al-Kawakib. RBSCL believes this item is in the public domain.
The pattern
This still is filed under Data as proof.
Define
A chart, map, or count that is the argument, not an illustration next to the argument.
Mechanism
Sighted evidence. The reader is asked to believe their eyes: a bar, a share, a spread on a map.
Verdict
The claim is comparative or quantitative and the figure can be read without a caption doing the sell.
Why it works
Instead of praising itself, the magazine prints a stamped, signed letter from a chartered accountant addressed to the head of Dar al-Hilal, certifying that May 1964 net sales rose against the previous month and against the same month a year earlier. The letterhead, reference number, revenue stamp and signature make the claim look audited, not boasted. The only sell is the closing line: read al-Musawwar every Thursday.
The big idea
al-Musawwar lets an outside accountant do the boasting: his stamped letter certifies that May 1964 sales rose, and the magazine only adds read it every Thursday.
The offer
Read al-Musawwar every Thursday.
The proof
A letter dated 7 June 1964 from chartered accountant Fouad Ahmed al-Sawaf to Ahmed Bahaa El-Din of Dar al-Hilal, with reference number, stamp and signature, certifying net sales rose over April and over May 1963.

Steal this when
Use it when you have a real third-party number, such as an audit, a certification or a count, and the document itself is more convincing than any headline you could write about it.
