Why it works
The cover is a diagram of the table of contents, so the thesis is legible before the first page is turned and the reader carries the structure through ten chapters without re-deriving it. Crane fixes the abstract claim with one concrete metaphor, the tree, and then keeps paying it off: root, stem, branch and fruit recur as the argument climbs from architecture to collective style. Every chapter names an influence rather than a period or a craft, which lets one system absorb Greek relief, Persian embroidery and a Victorian wallpaper without arranging them as a timeline. The captioned-original method converts taste into evidence: each assertion stands next to the object that produced it.
Steal this when
You have a taxonomy-shaped argument, ten parts that only mean something as a whole, and readers who will otherwise cherry-pick one chapter. Draw the structure once as a picture, put it on the cover, and let every chapter title be a slot in it.
