Why it works
The use of a negative/solarized image strips the human face of its naturalism, making it appear ghostly and infected. The stark geometric intrusions (the red bar and white circle) act like clinical censors, blindfolds, or medical diagrams violently superimposed on the human form. It is deeply unsettling, perfectly matching the taboo and visceral nature of the poem's subject without relying on gross-out realism.
