Why it works
The cover is the argument, not decoration. Mondrian's thesis is that meaning lives in the relationship between elements rather than in depicted things, so Moholy-Nagy builds the cover from nothing but black, white and red rectangles held in asymmetric balance, and the reader has accepted the premise before reading a line. The lettering does the same work: mixing cap sizes inside a single word turns type into proportion rather than label. Series identity is carried by a few fixed parts, the rotated BAUHAUSBÜCHER bar and the giant volume number, so every cover can be its own composition while the shelf still reads as one system.
Steal this when
You are building a numbered series or a content franchise where each issue needs its own face but the set must read as one thing on a shelf or in a feed. Lock a small number of fixed elements, the bar, the number, the palette, then let the rest of each cover be a fresh composition.
