Fixed architecture. Recognition lives in the frame. News lives in the picture. The two jobs stay separate.
Verdict
We publish on a fixed schedule and need instant recognition plus a new image every time.
Why it works
The constraint is the idea. Lissitzky, credited on the half-title as the constructor of the book, built the whole thing from material already sitting in a jobbing printer's case: rules, circles, bars and wood letter. The avant-garde page is therefore manufacturable in any shop, and the ornament is never decoration, only the mark the case could make. The thumb index turns navigation into a physical gesture, so a performer holding the book in one hand can open it at the right poem without reading a word, which is exactly what a book made for the voice needs. The red, black and white limit with no halftones keeps every spread legible at a glance and lets each display page work as a poster met at reading distance.
Steal this when
Steal this when a piece will be used, not just read, and the user has to find one part of it fast under pressure: a field guide, a run-of-show, a script, a pitch book. Steal the constraint too when you want a distinctive look out of a cheap process, by fixing a two-colour palette and building everything from shapes your production can already make.
