[Specimen of Printing Types]
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The whole book is one long demonstration close: nothing is claimed about the type that the type does not prove by being printed. The specimen setting does double duty, because the passages chosen are real commercial prose about lotteries, pleasure gardens and newspaper advertising, so a buyer sees his own copy in the fount rather than a neutral pangram. The opening Advertisement is a heritage move, trading on a founder dead sixty years to launder a modernised list, and it lands the scarcity line about the old specimen being nearly out of print to make the inherited stock feel like privileged access rather than old stock. Sizing the same passage down the range, from Six-Line Pica to Nonpareil, turns the catalogue into a comparison table a buyer can scan for fit.
Steal this when
Steal this when your product is the evidence and any adjective you add would only weaken it - a font library, a materials sample book, a photography or fabrication portfolio. Steal the Advertisement page specifically when you have inherited a respected name and need one calm paragraph that claims the lineage without apologising for having modernised the line.
