The Fleuron: A Journal of Typography, Number 5
The pattern
This still is filed under Specimen as proof.
Define
A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.
Mechanism
Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.
Verdict
Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.
Why it works
The piece converts a matter of taste into a matter of record. Instead of asserting which type is the true Garamond, it reproduces the dated sources and lets the reader compare serifs directly, which makes the conclusion feel discovered rather than asserted. The bound-in insets are the sharper device: a specimen printed by the foundry that owns the type turns the journal into a sampling mechanism, so the sales case and the editorial case arrive on the same sheet. Long italic captions under each figure do the persuading, because a reader who skips the essay still absorbs the argument from the picture captions.
Steal this when
Steal this when you are reviewing or comparing products you can physically include - a sample, a working demo, a real output file - and the comparison itself is the sales argument. Also steal the caption strategy for any document where scanners outnumber readers.
