The pattern

This still is filed under Specimen as proof.

Define

A specimen (type, material, finish) is shown so the product proves itself under comparison.

Mechanism

Controlled display. Same conditions, side by side, no adjective required. The sample is the sentence.

Verdict

Buyers choose by eye or by hand and we can put the real thing in front of them.

Read the pattern

Why it works

Fixing the copy and varying only the type is a controlled demonstration: it isolates the single variable the buyer is judging and makes cross-size comparison honest. Repeating roman and italic in the same passage on the same page proves the pair actually matches, which is the real purchase risk when buying a fount. The footline on every page works as a repeated signature, so no single sheet can be torn out and passed off as another founder's. Setting the display faces sideways is a practical decision that reads as confidence - the letters are too big for the page and the foundry would rather rotate the sheet than shrink the showing.

Steal this when

Steal the fixed-copy grid whenever you are asking someone to choose between variants of one thing - plans, finishes, models, sizes. Hold every element constant except the one being compared, repeat it identically on each page, and sign each page so the comparison cannot be lifted out of context.
